Giardia!

I have been unwell for a couple of days. I will spare you too many details, but despite my increasingly bland diet, I have been unable to keep any food in my body. Always supportive, my colleague Jennifer called this morning and offered to get my creative writing class situated so I could stay home and contemplate my writhing stomach (it looked kinda like this). As I told her that this "situation" had been going on for 10 days she responded with concerned maternal instincts: " THAT IS NOT GOOD! IT IS TIME TO GO TO THE DOCTOR." I jokingly replied to her concern by suggesting that maybe I have giardia.

I have just returned from the doctor's office where the good Dr. Hiniker asked me to provide a stool sample to be tested for.... none other than giardia (among other things). She asked if I have traveled of late and I asked if New York City counts. With raised eyebrows she made a notation in my file. Apparently it does.

We shall see...

According to the CDC, Giardia can be spread by:

-Accidentally putting something into your mouth or swallowing something that has come into contact with feces of a person or animal infected with Giardia.

-Swallowing recreational water contaminated with Giardia. Recreational water includes water in swimming pools, hot tubs, jacuzzis, fountains, lakes, rivers, springs, ponds, or streams that can be contaminated with sewage or feces from humans or animals.

-Eating uncooked food contaminated with Giardia.

-Accidentally swallowing Giardia picked up from surfaces (such as bathroom fixtures, changing tables, diaper pails, or toys) contaminated with feces from an infected person.

Wow, did you have THAT much underground fun in Philly?

so....how are you now? Blog readers want to know!

I had giardia from bathing in a river in Nepal. The only good thing was that after we figured out what it was (a month later) the medicine worked Fast.
